I’m not sure what it says about me that my humble beginnings started in Waco, Texas. And then there were all those years in Pine Bluff, Arkansas from which I am still recovering. Whatever else they did for me, those places propelled me off to Wellesley College as fast as I could get myself there. I would have walked if that was the only way I could escape. Luckily I got to fly north.
I have little explanation for my sudden urge to attend law school sometime after graduating from college. At the time I had no idea what I wanted to be ‘when I grew up’. Whatever the reason I now spend my days representing criminals. This could be because I find criminals more interesting that regular people, at least as far as the law goes. Writing about murder has a lot more zest to it than deciphering a contract.
In the middle of my career as a lawyer, I saw a brochure for a local acting class. I stared at it, read the descriptions of each class closely, and wondered what it would be like to perform. I then decided I must be crazy. Months went by until I saw another brochure for the same acting program. Instead of thinking about being a reality TV star on Survivor, which was at its peak of popularity at the time and the focus of a lot of my attention, I started thinking about actually being “an actor”.
I finally got off my butt and signed up for the class - Friday nights after work. It became the most enjoyable part of my week. After that class ended, I quit work to take acting classes full time. When I realized poverty would never work with my expensive taste in shoes, I went back to work but this time for myself and on my own terms.
This is my life now. I do criminal appeals and I act. I take classes, I audition, I perform and I love my life. I have a beautiful daughter (whose entrance into my world dramatically improved my acting ability and gave me the power to cry on cue). I have my cockapoo Rosie (who made me a better parent because I made all my mistakes on her before my daughter arrived) and the most supportive family in the world.
